Siena 2019 Director : Prof. Pier Luigi Sacco

Siena is the administrative center of the province of Siena in Tuscany. It is known as one of the best preserved medieval Italian cities. In the historic city center is the famous square Piazza del Campo, declared a World Heritage by UNESCO, where the spectacular horse race – Palio, was held.

The city announced his candidacy on 6 May 2011, in Barcelona, during the finals of the Euroleague Basketball.

The International Committee  Sienna 2019 was established, composed of 15 members with Director Professor Pier Luigi Sacco and the Local Committee for the city nomination, composed of 28 members. Both committees held the first meeting in December 2011.

Joint activities :

September 2011 - participation of Prof. Pier Luigi Sacco in the tenth meeting of the Committee on Education, Youth, Culture and Research at the Committee of the Regions in Sofia and discussion on the future of the " European Capital of Culture " and the contribution of culture to economic development of Europe cities and regions.

September 2013 - signed a Memorandum of Understanding by Mr. Bruno Valentino, mayor of Siena and Mrs. Yordanka Fandakova , Mayor of Sofia. The Memorandum can be seen here.
