Apart from being a major opportunity, the ECoC title is also a local, regional, national and European task. The role of the region to reinforce European values, to articulate European identities and to contribute to the construction of a common reference point in the ECoC process is a tremendous responsibility. Particularly today, in times of economic recession, political underrepresentation and social disintegration, the fundamental values we share in Europe need to be revisited through a 2019 celebration of “European added value”. To articulate Europe and the European in Sofia’s context, we want to explore the shared meanings and redefine values, bearing in mind the two poles: unity and diversity. What we hope to create is a soft environment for confrontations and debates which will challenge differences rather than accept difference.
